Valentine’s Day and Family Day on the same weekend; it’s a good time to spread the love!
As with most holidays over the past couple of years, we celebrated Valentine’s Day this year with delicious creations from Butter Love Baking. Emily is so talented! This year we celebrated our love for each other – and for Schitt’s Creek, with “Simply the Best” cookies. (Adam and Lisa were planning to dance to that song at their wedding, so I will definitely order some for them the next time they are home!)
Family Day is a relatively new statutory holiday in Ontario, and I LOVE it! Not just because we need a holiday in the middle of winter, but because we should be celebrating family (whatever that means to each of us)…especially this year!
For me the hardest part about this year is not seeing my family. It has been years since our kids moved to far off places, but this is the first year we have not enjoyed multiple visits and I do NOT love that!
The Truchon’s LOVE to celebrate all occasions with a houseful of family and friends! So traditionally Family Day weekend has involved a lot of visitors, a big pot of chili, and snowmobiling and ice fishing. We did have a couple of visitors this weekend – the crew from Stoneway Marble and Granite installed new kitchen counters on Friday, but it was pretty quiet with just four of us gathered around our beautiful new island.
Adam made bruschetta and Bridget made heart-shaped pizza and cinnamon rolls, and we talked to the rest of the gang at some point over the weekend. Then we played some euchre, went for a hike in the pretty snow and watched Superstore – if you have not watched Superstore on Netflix yet, I highly recommend it!
Last year Bridget and I spent Valentine’s Day in London with Lisa and Adam. It seems like a hundred years ago that we gathered for drinks and Adam showed up with gifts for his fiancée…and her mom and sister!
A year ago, we were just hearing about COVID-19, and it still seemed like something that was happening on the other side of the world. Now it is hard to imagine what life was like before COVID.
I can’t even imagine getting on to a crowded subway car and zipping around London like we did a year ago. I can feel anxiety spreading just picturing being in a museum or even a meeting room, and I have spent countless hours in one of those over the past 10 years.
I am looking forward to the day when we can gather around our new kitchen island with lots of friends and talk about our adventures. I know we will have them again; I am just having a hard time imagining what they will look like.
So, however you celebrated Valentine’s Day and Family Day at your house, I hope that you had time to enjoy all those you love most whether they are near or far. I also hope that next year’s celebrations see gatherings of family and friends!
Mario
I liked your perspective and both Cathy and surely missed visiting with children and friends. We’ve only held Anthony, who is now 14 months twice since his birth. It feels like such a travesty. But, given it all we are fortunate and thank the good Lord we’ve managed a year without friends and family getting Covid.
Carol
Thank you Mario! I am looking forward to gathering with you and Cathy as soon as it’s safe to do so!
